Art Fund

Have you heard of Art Fund before? Art fund is a UK charity, founded in 1903, that exists to help museums and galleries buy and display works of art for the nation to enjoy. Most of their funding comes from sales of the National Art Pass, which offers, free entry to into over 240 charging museums, galleries and historic houses in the UK, as well as 50% off.

The price of a National Art Pass is normally £65, but Art Fund has now created a Student Art Pass for just £5, open to all university students. There are over 1 million university students in the UK, but only a limited number of passes will be available between October and December.

As a student studying Graphics, I want to be able to help the Art Fund group to promote their biggest promotion. By creating a campaign that would help drive sales of the Student Art Pass amongst university students in autumn 2018.

Before I go ahead with my ideas, I have gone and research previous campaigns that works and found these examples. These examples had given me an understanding of what is a campaign and how it works. These examples had taught me that you got to produce a very interesting and useful campaign in a way you can draw out your target audiences.

One of the most useful and effective campaign that most company uses are merchandise product that would allow others to see it- it would then be promoting itself.

I have produced a poster promoting the £5 pass to students however, as I have not research museums' typography, the influence of the museum can not be seen through the poster I have created. Therefore, I have gone and looked at the type of fonts National History Museum and Tate Modern uses. I have explored the style of it by having a go at creating the alphabet of the same font hand crafted.  This would then enables me to transfer my newly gain skills on to the poster.

From the series of posters I have created for the museums, I have developed that idea by turning it into a Pinterest format. This would then allow those who search the word 'museums' see the poster. Each pic would provide a link to Art Fund giving them more information about the £5 pass.

As i have mentioned while looking at examples of useful campaign, I am developing my poster ideas to a merchandise product. This would allow customers who goes to the museums to purchase the product which will then allow others to see it.

#Everyonewantsagoodselfiebackground the idea behind this is to allow the social media to visually show that museums are great places for selfie. Since social media is used by almost everyone in the world, it would be a great idea to showcase the display online. This would allow friends and family of the person who had been to the museum get more information. Campaign using social media is not only an effective way but also the cheapest way to promote and advertise.

Information Graphic

Infographic sounded similar to my previous project- wayfinding system, that I wanted to continue producing style. For this project, I decided to make an infographic through languages. I chose languages because I have been quite interested in the topic that I started teaching myself how to learn Japanese. I wanted to know how many people like me wants to learn another language and would also like to know the reason why. Therefore, I have produced a mini survey for my international and friends to answer. This would then help me understand why people wants to learn another language and to why they are studying it- to what purpose?

After receiving the responses to my survey, I have decided to research about the English language. Understand why there are so many countries can speak English and to why they provide it as a compulsory for students to study.

As I have gathered the informations i  needed, I have now then created my first initial ideas influenced by the understanding I gain from my research. Through looking at examples of infographic map had given me ideas that i could possibly add on my current idea. Ideas including key to information and colours.

Way Finding: Signage

Have you ever gone to places for the first time and thought to yourself. "Where the hell am I!?" When going to new places you have never been before you would want to have signs, maps and service guide that are available, legible and ones that you can understand. Otherwise you would be like "Am i lost? How do you get to this place!?" These are the times when signage should be helpful. But. Are they really helpful? Do they help you get to your destination? What makes a good and bad signage? Lets find out!

As a student at Ravensbourne University at North Greenwich, I know my way around the area as I commute every week and it is now easy to get to my destination. However, for those that it is there first time coming to North Greenwich to see, lets say, The O2 Arena, the river, and the University. Would they  be able to go to thesse places without breaking a sweat or would they be scratching their head in front of a map wondering which direction to take.

North Greenwich Station provides good information for location but they are not enough. They have signs that will lead people to the O2 but what about the other places such as The Emirates, the river that is located at the back, Ravensbourne University? Therefore, as a collective, we have decided to tackle this problem by providing a solution of having a clearer signage system.

I have produced an illustration ideas that could possibly used as a useful signage system. This would help remind me of ideas I've thought of while visually designing each ideas to make it work.

As a collective, we have created a survey for those who commute to answer. These question will help us understand the problem North Greenwich is having. This would also provide information to how many commuters travel to North Greenwich per week and to also know where they are going. These questions would also help support our ideas as the response could be use as a reference.

The responses we received from the survey. After having to ask the people who commute, I have know understand what is the problem North Greenwich is having with their signage system. It has been proof by the people we have talked to that there is a lack of signage system here at North Greenwich. North Greenwich just does not have enough signage system that would help tourist, disabled and other target audience move their own way around the area. After having spoken to North Greenwich customer service lady, she had been honest with us and told us that the designer who designed the area of North Greenwich assumed that everyone who comes here would be able to understand English. But that is not the case for most of the time. There are thousands of people who come to North Greenwich per week and most of them are foreign, international people. Therefore, they should provide information where it allows other customer to be able to understand the information clearly.

Looked at examples of effective and useful signage system. These examples had given me an insight to what is a good signage system and a bad one. These example are effective to where they are located. For example, the signage system for Japan airport is designed based on the upcoming Olympics therefore, tracks can be seen everywhere the airport.  The designer have clearly put in mind the event that is about to take place.

Typotheque

Have you ever thought about what music would look like if it was drawn out? Well, in my case, I never once thought that music can be drawn out either until today.

Thinking about how music could be drawn had given me an insight to each every sound there is in a music. I was able to listen and concentrate on a single sound while the music is playing as a unison. Did you know that concentrating to the sound of a music is so relaxing that it helps you feel sleepy? That's the feeling I felt went drawing the music. It was relaxing, calm and peaceful.

Did you know that through scribbles of lines can we create the letters in the alphabet? If you think it is not possible. Look at my work. From the drawings I created from listening to music, I was able to find each letters in the alphabet including capital or lower key letters. Although the result won't be as we anticipated as it would be different than any other fonts we have seen but it would be personal and unique fonts.

As this project is asking for a poster for an exhibition, I thought that it would be a great idea if the exhibition would theme typography. I had this idea after doing the drawing the music activity- it made me want to research and create more typography fonts like ones I have created and found.

Looking at Philippe Apeloig who creates his typography through lines and shape had inspired me to produce a similar format. I think that words that are created through shapes are a cool, interesting, and different idea in which I want to try.

Tried copying the yellow line typography by Philippe but since mine was done hand-crafted it didnt look as good Philippe's. However, I was able to gain new skills that I could then transfer in the nearer future. The idea of using bright colour on dark background to present words is a very interesting typography format.

Create your Identity

  • What is the purpose of a brand?
The purpose of the brand is to communicate what they stand for
  • What is an excellent example of self-promotion and why?
Advertising through clothes such as Nike that shows of the logo.
  • Is a brand a company, a product, or a person?
A brand could be everything as the product could be the person advertising the brand for the beneficial of the company.

Have you ever thought about what kind of object you would like to be if you were to become a product or what brand would you create for yourself? Well, in my case, yes. I once wished I was something not human an animal perhaps- like a dog. Have you ever been curious about what your pet dogs (if you do have a pet dog) are thinking about? What's inside of their mind? What are they thinking? Do they understand us? or can they remember what happened the other day? Those little things makes me curious about a dog's life that I wished I was a dog myself to be able to understand. Therefore, if I were to become a product or a brand I would chose something that is animal related. I am personally in love with animals that if they stay with me for more than one day and the next day they disappear I would cry my eyes out because I miss them and wants to be with them- true story.

As a person who was born in August 12 my star sign is Leo. Leo the lion that is confident and brave. While looking through my horoscope and what it says for Leo's it somehow match with my life which is quite strange.

I have created my very own logo for my own product as I thought it would be a good idea to have my own company's logo than have an existing one. The idea behind this logo is to show that it is about zodiac signs and that my characteristic would be Leo the Lion. Therefore, a lion is designed at the background and Zodiac as the title.

I have decided to develop my logo design by transferring it onto a merchandise. This would help promote the product as it can be seen by many and shops would be selling it.

I have looked at an artist that could help me design my product and found Peony Yip. I was influence by her graceful art work as it shows a beautiful connection between the two characters. I thought that this is how I want to show myself. Show who I am but also show my other side.

These are my illustration ideas for my product design. It is influenced by Peony Yip through the fusion of my zodiac sign. I have experimented with materials and developed the idea by allowing both illustration to be clearly seen.

Record Recode

Alphabet through Human Form:

I learnt that alphabets can only not form through type or by hand writing but also through human form. By playing around and having fun at the same time gives us the possibility to make our body form the alphabet such as B and D.

Being a little flexible is an advantage to form the
alphabet as it helps create difficult shape such as a curve or round shape. I done the bridge to form the D and I was able to do this without hurting myself

I found an artist called Philippe that forms objects through human form and decided that I would use his idea and therefore, i came up with a repetition human form forming ABC. Using the 'b' human form, edited it by removing the background leaving me with the silhouette human form. The bridge forming the curve for D is combined with the b human form to form the overall D

Another artist name Kalen Holloman has influenced me to make the alphabet through a collage. I decided to make the difficult letters such as 'Q' as a collage because it is quite unlikely to form the letter 'Q' through human form therefore, by doing a collage will help me form the rest of the alphabets.

This is a human form forming the letter 'A' with the help of a prop. Since human being only has two legs there is no third leg to make the horizontal line therefore, I improved by using a prop and placed it behind to form the A. I learnt that this helps with difficult alphabets such as A and H.

By doing the workshop of experimenting with A  and my chosen art movement- I learnt that it is possible to design the alphabet in a style of my chosen art movement.

I learnt that by using objects and its first letter could be use as a formation of the alphabet. A is for apple and the round shape of the apple is the round shape for baby a. The two wheels on a bike is the two rounds on B. By experimenting with objects and its first letter helped me with my collage idea.

Using hands to form the alphabet and reflecting it before the light gives me the shadow alphabet. Combining that with a A-Z alphabet gives me the collage effect.

Storytelling

StoryTelling

Image 1
I have decided that using my primary pictures that I have taken relating with the book that I receive- On the Road by Jack Kerouac I would use them to create ideas that I could possibly use as a book cover. Image 1 shows my current four initial ideas that I came up with. I have decided that I would use mix media as my material as an experimentation and as a guideline to help support me for my later printing process.

The idea on the top left hand side of Image 1 is not a road but a train track. I thought that it would be a great idea to experiment with different location rather than sticking with the original one. Also, I find the idea of train track more interesting than a road in a way that train tracks are more detailed than the features of a road.

Image 2
I have research more into about the book- On the Road by Jack Keroauc and found that it was turned into a movie starring Kristen Stewart, Garret Hedlund, Kirsten Dunst and Sam Riley. I have decided to watch the movie to give me more understanding and knowledge of what On the Road is all about because reading what it is all about online is not useful at all therefore watching the movie version would help me understand what it is.

After watching one-fourth of the movie, I have found it very boring and not interested kind of feeling that I decided to finish there and then at that moment. I have learnt a bit about what it is while watching that- Sal Paradise, Sam Riley, is a writer or a poet that travels around with his friend and being on the road is kind of his home. I have research more about this subject by asking those who knows about it, someone who was born before the book come out and that is my dad. He was born on 1956 and the book was published on 1957, one year in between. When I mentioned the title to him he immediately knew what I was talking about. He told me what he knew about On the Road and the information that I received is recorded on my brainstorm as shown from image 2 left hand side.
In addition, the right hand side on image 2 are my primary pictures that I have mentioned relating with On the Road by Jack Keroauc.

Image 3

As an experimentation I have decided that I would use my skills for printing as a process for this project. Mono printing is a way to show different way of drawing. I used one of the image that I have taken and decided that I would experiment with my pictures in different methods. I have learnt that by putting more ink gives a darker tone which makes it harder to draw out the lines on my image and that less ink or just alright amount ink gives me the satisfactory that I am looking for. As this book is targeting young adults, I have decided that I would add color into the dark piece so that it'll give off life and show brightness within the piece. If there is something I would change about this page it would be the material that I use to color. I used oil pastel instead of gouache which I preferably would like to use but since I didn't have the material with me I ended up using oil pastel instead. I learnt that for a better result, have the right material with you.

Image 4

From mono printing to development by using mix media of mono print and pen ink drawing. I like to experiment quite a lot using different materials because it then gives me the chance to see what works better together and what would look good for this project. If I would be given another chance to develop this page, I would make a change by putting in colors, using different color ink for mono printing to show contrast between ink pen and mono print.

Image 5

This image is influence by my chosen artist, David Hockney. From his 'bus stop ahead' collage work, I was influence to the way that it is a collage but it doesn't look like it is since there is only one type of image that was used. I tried producing the same technique but I couldn't figure out how Hockney created his collage. Therefore, as an experimentation, I created by own collage by hand and the result is shown above. Using the skills that I have learnt from our previous project, I have decided that I would use two different color for this collage and by turning my image into RGB mode, I was able to turn one of the image into RGB blue. If there is something I would like to learn more is to how Hockney created his collage because I would like to someday use this skills for later future.
Image 6
From the mono print of one of the images relating to On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I have gone and develop that mono print by turning it into a collage to show that I have used the idea that I have designed on Image 1. Although it doesn't look completely like the one i designed on image 1, it is based solemnly on that idea. Since mono printing makes the result look like it has been flip the design and composition looks different from both design idea from image 1 and from the actual image that I use to mono print. I would develop this page again by adding more trees and colors and use less ink and thicker lines to show what I actual drawn onto the mono print. I could also use the process of rotation to show that it has been mirrored from the cars glasses.

Image 7
Image 7 is influenced by another artist called Tom Hammick. I chose his work to work from because his silhouettes of trees and bright colors has caught my attention that I wanted to produce a similar style. Using the mono print that I have created I used the lines to make the silhouettes of my trees. Instead of stenciling then spray painting on the stenciled work that I did I decided that I would paint the background similar to the way Hammick printed his and on top of that would be the stenciled trees. This then gave me the similar style as Hammick's. I would have preferred if the painting of the trees was colored spray paint than watercolor because it will then give me the bright tone that I am looking for.

Image 8
Image 8 is my research pages that I have put together to know more about the product I am designing. I found different types of book jacket cover- one is a gate fold that you flip both sides and the other one is a fold out book that is usually designed for a children's book cover. If there are different kind of book that means there are also different kinds of book binding and I have shown a quick sketch of what each book binding looks like. For my book cover I am planning to keep it simple by using the perfect binding this is because my target audience are travelers/tourist that they would prefer a perfect binding cover book than a wire binding book cover because the perfect binding gives you a comfortable touch when holding the book.

As I have mentioned already, my target audience would be travelers/tourist. This is plainly because the book is about traveling that I thought this would be more for those who likes to travel a lot to to give them inspiration while travelling. This is also good for young adults who likes adventure genre because the design covers that I have designed are solemnly based on the road which means it is a journey or an adventure for the character.

I have learnt I need to think about different sizes when laying out my experimentation on my book to to give me spaces to annotate what I have accomplished and also to show that I can experiment using different format. This peer feedback made me think about more about who might be my target audience and how can i design a book cover specially for them, how it can appeal to my audience and how i can draw my target audience to buy the book.

Image 10

Image 11

Image 12
Image 9, 10, 11 and 12 are book jacket covers that I have designed for On The Road by Jack Kerouac. From the work I have produced for experimenting I have used those to create a final book jacket cover and the result is shown above. I have used two different design for each side of the book jacket cover to show a story line to how I developed my work. It could be that instead of actually designing for On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I could be designing my own book and the story is within the design on each book cover.

I have looked at different samples of a book cover to help me layout my book cover and I found one where it says 'Percy Jackson- Now a major film'. I have read the book and watched the movie Percy Jackson and decided that I would do the same layout for this book since On the Road by Jack Kerouac was turned into a movie as well as Percy Jackson. From the original book On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I noticed that it all includes the logo of a penguin and decided that I would look what it is and found that it's a British publishing house. Since it was included in the original book, I decided that I would do the same but instead of placing it in the front cover I would place it at the bottom of the spine to show that it is linked with the Penguin Book.
Image 13
Since I have researched different kind of book and texture, I have decided that i would try printing on a different kind of paper and I chose fabric with its soft texture. The result is shown above from image 13. As you can see, it didn't turn out as I anticipate it would since the printer where I printed from and the fabric was not compatible with each other therefore it did not print out the whole design. I tried couple of times to print again on the same fabric but the fabric just keep getting stock inside the printer and I was worried that my printer would break therefore, I had decided to give it up. If there will be another for me to print on fabric, I would love to do it again to see what it actually looks like on fabric print. I learnt that I should never use a dock tape onto the fabric for the printer to use because it gets stock inside that I thought I had broken my printer.

The right hand side on image 13 is my development for the mono prints that I have made for this project and using the series of development I have decided that I would use those series to make a zine. Using the skills and knowledge that I have gain from our previous project, I have decided that I would bring that skills in for this project to show that I can do it again and that I don't do it just for that project but also that I could use it for something else.
Image 14

Image 15

Image 16
Image 14, 15 and 16 are posters I have designed for the book cover that I also produced. The reason why I designed a poster because my target audience are travelers and young adults. Young adults are more likely to view my advertising product online than visually because young adults are into social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and etc. Also, travelers are often travelling that they haven't got the time to be going on book stores or library to check out a new release book therefore, advertising a poster online and advertising an ad on Facebook and or YouTube would be a great way to let them know about it. Image 16 is based on Divergent poster that I found online and I was inspired to the way it was advertising the book therefore, I decided to produce a similar outcome.

Image 17 and 18 are my final outcome that I have produced for this 'Storytelling' project.
