Week 3: Fashion and Textile

Fashion and Textile

Our learning aim for day 1 at fashion and textile is:

  • To understand how to extract shapes from drawings
  • To produce and translate shapes from 2D into 3D
  • To be able to further develop ideas on the stand.

From the research that I have made about my chosen art image, in this case, JKC2 house by Ong and Ong, I am to divide this image using a viewfinder into 6 sections. To do this, there are rules applied: Only use a pencil or a pen. No colour allowed as we are extracting shape and form NOT colour.
Image 1 (Process of using viewfinder)
Image 2 (Process of using viewfinder)

Image 3 (Six section sketches)
Image 1 and 2 shows my process of using my handmade view finder which I then extract and enlarge the image by having a drawing version as shown from image 3. Using an actual viewfinder has helped me focused on what I am drawing as I tend to get distracted by the other section outside my imaginative viewfinder as I have forgotten where I have placed my imaginative line.

From the drawings that I have made and divide into 6 section (shown from image 3), I am to produce 6 different samples using the drawings as an inspiration to create these samples. There are rules applied: must use white paper only. From this white paper, we are to use different kind of techniques such as ripping, slashing, rolling, folding and scratching to create our samples.

Image 4 (Samples)

Image 4 shows the 3 samples that I have created. I was not able to produce 6 samples as I have run out of time producing these samples. I have actually made 4 samples and the 4th one was of a stairs. I did not personally liked the sample of the stairs that I have produced because I wasn't confident enough to know how to make one and the outcome did not pass my liking therefore, I purposely did not take a picture of it. Do not get me wrong. I was planning to take a picture of it eventually after I develop it however, time has run out and I wasn't able to get back to it nor take a picture of my 4th sample.

From the 3/4 samples that I have create, I am to select 1 sample and make 6 of them in either the same size, if it's A4 or make it bigger but the size should be no bigger than A4. In my case, I have chosen the tree sample as it is my preferred sample out of the rest and also it's a sample that is actual inspired by the drawings I have created from image 3.

Out of all the samples everyone in my class has created, we are now to develop those ideas by displaying them on a stand.

Photo of us working on stand

Image 5 (Sketches and Images of working on stand)

Above, are the images and sketches of the stand we have dressed up using the samples we have created. The sketches are a continuous drawing making the drawing larger and messier. Personally, I think the idea of continuous drawing was magnificent. The reason being is instead of focusing on what we are drawing, we are focusing mainly on what's in front of us and in this case, the stand displaying the ideas we have created. In addition, the outcome of the sketches making it messier relates to how we first started putting our ideas together. From the start, no one had clearly had everything planned out by having there ideas out there in front of them. All of us thought of an idea then later on had to change and develop these ideas and the process and methods of our working are a mess and that's what the continuous drawing reminded me of. It reminded me of us working and growing.

As you can see from image 5, I have started to develop these drawings by actually drawing from an image instead of observational drawing. This is to prove if my feelings are true or if my drawings are clearly just that messy.
Image 6 (Mood Board)

Image 6 is my mood board where I have gathered my ideas into one page. This mood board will help me focus on my initial ideas and I can also add in ideas that later might come in handy. This mood board contains architecture of my chosen architect and a model from which have won Miss Universe 2015 and extra ideas relating with the model such as her country's national dress, Philippines nyana.

Day 2 learning objective:
  • Understand how to develop ideas on the stand
  • Produce and make a wearable piece of art using paper

Using the samples, photographs and initial ideas, we are to produce a final wearable piece of art using only brown and or white paper. The main objective for this day is to be able to produce a wearable piece of art but also to be able to remove the piece from the stand as it is to be worn by a model.

Image 7 (Finished piece)
Image 7 shows final piece of my wearable piece of art influenced by Miss Universe 2015, Pia Wurtzbach country's national dress and architecture lines.

According from my peers, the wearable piece of art that I produced reminded her of the word 'rock', not 'rock' as in stones, but 'rock' as in heavy metal and music. When I was told that it looked like 'rock' I didn't quite agree with her as I don't see any influence of my work being called 'rock'. When I look at my work, I see a bikini with sleeves and it also reminded me of tropical. However, after looking up what rock fashion look like, I now understand why my work was referred to as 'rock' because of the long decoration on sleeves that I added in which I thought I will use for  the influence of the architecture side.
In contrast, fellow Filipinos from my class saw my process of making my wearable art and told me that it looked like a Philippine Nyana which made me feel relived and pleased that what i'm trying to show to them is what they have just told me and that is, Philippine Nyana. I understand why the person who gave me the word 'rock' for my wearable art and I don't expect them to tell me that it looks like Philippine Nyana because they won't know what it is, only fellow Filipinos will know therefore, I gladly accept the word 'rock'.
Next time, if I will be given another chance to produce another wearable piece of art, I will make sure that it's not something only people with the same nationality as I am will know what I am trying to produce but a world wide theme such as Halloween and floral.

Image 8 (Rock Research)
Image 9 (Mind Map)

Photos of my Dad then and now

Image 9 is the mind map of what the word 'rock'. Personally, I am not sure what the word 'rock' actually mean therefore, with the help of friends, I have asked them what the word 'rock' reminds them of and Image 8 shows where I have gotten my research from my mind map. While they are telling me their own thought about 'rock' I am starting to understand what the word 'rock' actually mean and 'rock' reminded me of my Dad. My Dad, Keith Gordon, he has been on the television before because of his tattoos, is a big heavy metal fan of Kiss, AC-DC, Metallica, WASP and other heavy metal band. Seeing that he is a big heavy metal fan, I found photos of him back in his 20's where he used to dress up 'rock'. Overall, my Dad is a work of art seeing what he looks like then and now.

Image 10 (Design Board)
Image 10 is my design board showing collages of my dad with background location and with the wearable piece of art that I made. I have decided after all to use the inspiration of my dad as my model and to do this, I am going to use collage his photo with the wearable art and with my chosen location. This will then give me an overall outcome for a photo shoot.
If I was born in the century my Dad dressing up as 'rock' and I have been given this task to create a wearable piece of art that will be put on a model, I would have him to model the art work that I have created.

Image 11 (Photo Shoot)

Image 11 is the overall finished structure of my narrative. My layout (as shown on image 11) is influenced by Woolfgang Tillman. A man known for his photographs of everyday life and contemporary culture and for his pioneering method of displaying prints as whole-room installations.
The format and the ways in which his work is distributed or made visible in the public space allows him to present work and engage audiences in a completely different manner.

While planning for our photo shoot, we have decided to divide into groups of 3 with the role of stylist, model and photographer.
  • Stylist- Nikita
  • Model- Diana
  • Photographer- Meda
The wearable piece of art that Nikita and Meda had produced are quite small therefore they needed someone small to model for them and only me can do it therefore, I modeled for 2 person's photo shoot and worn 2 different wearable piece of art. For Nikita, her location is quite straight forward however, getting there is the problem. Her idea was (just to let you know, our College is right next to a river) to be able to get as close to the river and have the model which is me, standing beside the water. However, the water on the river has risen unbelievably high therefore, there is no option but to stay up shore. From there, I modeled for her while wearing the work she had produced.

Furthermore, Meda's location for her photo shoot is quite easy therefore, we have decided to do her photo shoot last as her location is at our College. For me, I found her instruction for modeling for her work much easier than Nikita's instructions because Meda only had me leaning on a wall and walking up and down a couple of times to get the photography technique that she wanted.

For my photo shoot, I only needed the location therefore no one had to model for my work. I am quite disappointed as no one gets to wear them and model for me and see what it looks like on an actual model and not just on a 2D model. However, it made it a lot easier for us three to finish up our work and give us time to edit and layout our images in a style of Woolfgang Tillman.

Week 2: Lens based media

Lens Based Media

Photography
Photography means drawing with light. It can be broken down into 3 general categories. The first is Light Drawing where the light source can be seen by the camera during long exposure. The second category is Kinetic Light Painting where the lights in the scene generally remain stationary while the camera itself is moved about during a long exposure to create color and design within the frame. The third category is Light Painting in where the light is selectively illuminate into parts of a scene during a long exposure.

Distortion
In photography, there are two types of distortions; optical and perspective. Both result in some kind of deformation of images- some lightly and others very noticeably. Optical distortion is caused by the optical design of lenses (and is therefore often called "lens distortion"), perspective distortion is caused by the position of the camera relative to the subject or by the position of the subject within the image frame.

Golden Ratio
The golden ratio is a number that can by found by taking a line or another shape and dividing it into two parts. When a line or shape is divided into two parts based on the golden ratio, it will be divided in a way that if you divided the length of the longest section by the length of the smallest section, it would be equal to the original length of the shape divided by the longest section.

The golden ratio is perfectly balanced making it pleasing to the human eye. The reason for this, the golden ration crosses from math over into art. The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are both paintings that use golden ratio. In photography, the golden ratio can be use to identify the main subject while still leading the viewer's eye through the entire image.

4th Dimension
Time

Essential qualities of photography

  • Pattern
  • Symmetry
  • Texture
  • Line
  • Shape
  • Form
  • Folor
  • Depth of Field

Difference between shape and form

  • Shape is 2 dimension
  • Form is 3 dimension.

Depth of Field
Distance of focus between the nearest and the furthest object in an image.

Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas is a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Was regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism and preferred to be called a realist. He is identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dances. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes.
Degas is famous as a painter of ballet dancers, and the theme of the dance class or rehearsal was one of the preoccupation of his later career.

Eadweard Muybridge

Eadweard Muybridge was the man who famously proved a horse can fly. By adapting the latest technology, he proved his theory by getting a galloping horse to trigger the shutters of cameras. The experiment proved indisputably for the first time what no eye has previously seen- that a horse lifts all four hooves off the ground at one point in the action of running. He invented the zoopraxiscope, a method of projecting animated versions of his photographs as short moving sequences, which anticipated subsequent developments in the history of cinema.

The Lumiere Brothers
Lumiere brothers, French inventors and pioneer manufacturers of photographic equipment who devised an early motion-picture camera and projector called the Cineatographe.

Framing the World

Photography
Its a process of drawing with light.  It's a picture made using a camera in which an image is focused on to light sensitive material and then made visible and permanent by chemical reaction. It's a thing of a thing.

Don Mccullin
"Photography for me is not looking, it's feeling. If you can't feel what you're looking at, then you're never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures."

Illse Bing

Man Ray

William Eggleston
William Eggleston's photographs monumentalize  everyday subject matter, such as motel rooms and storefronts, in eccentric, refined compositions. Each is potentially carrying beauty and mystery . He is someone who looks where no one doesn't bother to look.

Rankin

Bill Brandt
Brandt's photographs are relatively forward. He did not adopt the unusual viewpoints of some modernist photographers. His social documentary photographs is formal clarity often achieved in the darkroom, by cropping under the enlarger and by emphasizing tonal contrasts in printing.
Brandt also used montage, combining portions of two negatives in one print.

Formal qualities

Pattern
With our surroundings, we went and explore places where we can possibly find pattern around us. I tried to look where nobody look and decided to ignore patterned clothing such as polka dots dress, strips t-shirt and skirts and instead, decided to choose ones where no one will think it's a pattern. In my case, I have chosen to take an image of the smallest pattern that is recorded on a sofa however, the camera that I used wasn't able to capture it clearly therefore i had to abandon it and look for something else. I found some quite interesting pattern around my College such as the pattern forming from stuck of chairs creating a repeatedly rectangular shapes.

Symmetry/Asymmetry

Searching for objects or living object that looks like it could be a symmetry or asymmetry example was quite difficult as I have think if the object in front of me could be a symmetry or asymmetry example. I found an arrow pointing upwards and downwards from the elevator but i thought that this arrow is quite obvious therefore I have decided not to choose it as my final example. I found this image up on a wall from a classroom showing the letter "V" by the door in between rooms that's dark and bright. The bright room reflected the "v" letter to the dark room making 'v' looking like its 'k'.I found this rather unusual and it's somewhere no one will look at it. I took the chance and grab it before someone does.

IMAGE OF JUMP

I wanted to try the idea of portraying an image of what's about to happen or what has already happen and used this image of my brother back when we were at a museum and found this display where we thought we could do something fun with it. Therefore, we had my brother position next to frame of the display and bend down as though he is about to jump on the pool. If I were to re-take this photo of'jump' I would think about my lighting next time just to add this extra effect of it being outside on a sunny day and you are on the pool cooling down.

Framing a world- Film

Produce a magical short film no more than 3 edits and consider the following:
  • Location
  • Character
  • Action
Produce a single shot short film and consider the following:
  • The Reveal
  • Blocking
  • Framing

In a group of six, we had decided to use a paper boat as the props for our magic short film. The idea was to create a 3D boat out of a paper and creating the object as a drawing version on to a piece of paper. The idea that I had for the drawing of the boat was to have the exact same proportion as the 3D boat to create this illusion of it coming to life.
As of for the location of the scene, we chose the river Thames where actual real life boats do past by. As a group, we had problems getting the 3D boat in place with the real boat that is moving. The reason being is the use a stick as another prop to have the boat moving and the location we have chosen has barriers therefore our movement is very limited.  How we have done this 'magical' short film is not how I expected it as an outcome. What I had in mind doesn't involve moving boats or including a real version. My idea for this task was simple and it is to have a 3D version prepared and stand by and also a drawing version in where we will then cut out then have the 3D version which we have created pop out from the cut out piece creating this illusion of it coming to life.
I was able to share this idea to the group but I just wished  that I had only explain it properly.
The idea is inspired by Zack King who produces magnificent work of turning a mere drawing of a cat to real life version. However, this idea didn't go as plan as I wasn't able to explain to the group what it is that I had in mind.
Furthermore, the work we had produced turned out alright as the group was able to participate and give out their idea making it easier for everyone to know what we are doing.

Framing a world- Animation

Metamorphisis
The ability to facialite chnage from one form into another without edit.

Jan Svankmajer
- Bring everything to life
- Imagination is subversive
- Imagination is the biggest gift humanity

Create a 1 second (25 frame) animated transition and present as a looping GIF (Graphic Interchange Form) using 6 A4 sheets of papers.

This task is where I got all excited because it is my first time ever I am going to attempt producing my very own GIF animation. My partner and I had this idea in the beginning where we will have an egg dropping down from the sky where it will hit the ground and crack. The egg will crack and  a chick will pop out. As it tries to get out it will slowly turn into an elephant, an elephant with a big giant ears with the ability of flying, just like dumbo. However, as the task is based on metamorphosis, our idea is not something where something is turning into something unexpected, for example, a man turning into a bug. Therefore, my partner and I decided that we will keep the idea of an egg falling down the sky and cracking but instead of having dumbo coming out of the egg, we would have a fireworks launching and bursting turning into a flower. Before coming up with this new idea, we both struggled as to how we are going to illustrate this idea as we are given only 6 blank sheet of papers to work with and drawing of the egg falling and cracking already took up the 3 whole pages therefore, we had to fast forward our idea jumping to a fireworks exploding into a flower. If we are given another chance to create a GIF animation, I would personally think about my idea first then start thinking about how is this related to metamorphosis then from there, will I start my illustration of my idea. In conclusion, my partner and I really loved the work we have produced and found it quite funny as our work from paper is now moving creating this story of a fallen egg turning into a flower. Even though our idea was not the best out of the lot, to ourselves, we think it's the best.

Week 1: Dissent and Resistance

Dissent and Resistance

Aim:
To develop research skills by exploring a variety of primary and secondary sources (original and interpreted research material). And to then apply that research to practice through the development of continuous reflective practice.

Tate Modern:
Tate Modern
Tate Modern is a modern art gallery located in London. It is Britain's national gallery of international modern art and forms part of the Tate group (together with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Online). Tate Modern is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. As with the UK's other national galleries and museums, there is no admission charge for access to the collection displays, which take up the majority of the gallery space, while tickets must be purchased for the major temporary exhibitions.

Yellow Curve
  Yellow Curve
Here, is an image of one of the display at Tate. A yellow curve produced by Ellsworth Kelly in 1996. Ellsworth is an American painter and sculptor who was influenced at the development of minimalism, hard-edge painting, color field and pop art. He explored colour and shape or 'form' and was interested in how we experience his art physically. His yellow triangle doesn't represent anything other than what it is. He said that the  space he was interested in was not the surface of the painting 'but the space between you and the painting'.
Personally, while figuring what the display reminds me or what it makes me feel, I came to a conclusion that it can't possibly be just a yellow curve, that, it probably has its own  history or hidden meaning to it. Like for example, I thought that it could be a missing piece from a jigsaw puzzle that had a round shape providing the curve. And, somehow or another, Ellsworth found this rather interesting or it provide a  significant meaning that's why he has decided to produce it.

View from the Window
View from the Window

This display caught my attention as I thought I was looking through a window inside a plane but it was in fact a window from a house, just not from a plane.

This display is called 'View from the Window' produced by Marie- Louise Von Motesiczky at Vienna in 1925. The oil painting on canvas depicts a view of roofs and facades seen from the artist's fourth-floor flat in Vienna where she lived during the first half of 1920s.

 Purification

This image is one of the part of the display that I have taken a picture of. Purification is produced by Barthelemy Toguo in 2012 made from watercolor and graphite on paper. The vast, banner-like watercolor painting is covered with a sequence of human figures interwoven with handwritten sentences taken from the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 'Purification was born from the response to sufferings endured by various groups of people around the world.
Toguo said 'I have unrolled my vision in a nightmare frieze: human beings are abused, tortured, amputated, beaten to death... Man must regenerate his own culture... He must operate a purge over himself and purify (himself) from his crimes and horrors'.

I found this display rather upsetting in a way human beings are being treated like animals, showing no mercy towards each other. I thought that , we must be very lucky to have  live a life without experiencing what those people have experienced back in the day.
